Mardi Gras Mambo: Randazzo's Camellia City Bakery

On January 6th, King's Day, Carnival Season officially starts and every New Orleanian knows what that means.......

It's King Cake Time!!!!

So, it is only fitting that we start our "Mardi Gras Mambo" giveaway series off with a King Cake Package from Randazzo's Camellia City Bakery!

Bridgette from The Not So Blog and I just love the sweet smell of King Cake! We knew that we must share this totally yummy tradition (and calories!) with our readers.

As a child, my favorite part of king cake season was always Friday afternoons, because this was when we would always get some KING CAKE. They made sure to do this on Friday afternoon so that they would not deal with all the children on their sugar highs. LOL

King's Day is celebrated as the date the gift-bearing Magi visited the baby Jesus. The King Cake is baked in honor of the three kings and the baby (plastic, porcelain or gold) placed inside the cake symbolizes the baby Jesus. Originally, these oval cakes were a simple ring of dough with a small amount of decoration. Today's King Cakes are much more festive! After the rich Danish dough is braided and baked, the "baby" is inserted. The top of the ring or oval cake is then covered with delicious sugar toppings in the traditional Mardi Gras colors: purple, green and gold.

In New Orleans, King Cake parties are held throughout the Carnival Season. The person who receives the slice of cake with the baby is asked to continue the festivities by hosting the next King Cake party. So always be careful which piece you take!!

The nice folks over at Randazzo's Camellia City Bakery have graciously offered one lucky reader

a medium traditional king cake package (including baby) baked to perfection! This package includes a unique Randazzo's Mardi Gras theme bag, stuffed with beads, doubloons, the history of Mardi Gras and the king cake, a 2009 commemorative 11x 16 color poster, and a beautiful feather mask.

Randazzo's Camellia City Bakery continues a long family tradition of handmade and braided king cakes and say with heartfelt sincerity that everything at Randazzo's is "made with love from beginning to end."

Randazzo's was even featured on the Food Network's popular program Unwrapped!

I see you drooling! You must want to win a King Cake! Lucky for you, we have one to give away!

Growing up I would have chosen Pecan-Praline, but I'm allergic to pecans now, alas! I think I'd probably choose the mix of cream cheese and pineapple. Thank you for the fun giveaway!

Thanks so much. What a great tradition these are.

I don't think I would get a filling-- I think it looks delicious on it's own. But, if push came to shove, I would probably do the pecan prailine.

I'm a cream cheese junkie. They sometimes put so much cream cheese on these that it seems like it's more cream than cake. YUMMY!

Becky said...

Maybe I'm a big dork and don't see it, but I don't see where they are doing fillings right now..le sigh...I love King Cake though

Unknown said...

I can't find the fillings either. I tried Foxfire and IE. Reading others comments, I guess I would go with the Cream Cheese.

Brn2lisn said...

For some reason, the 'filling' option won't let you remove as 'no filling' selected so I am unable to browse what they have and offer, except for what has already been mentioned. Based on the previous comments I would be really interested in trying the cheese and pecans.

Oh, I'd have to go with the strawberry filling. Thanks for this great giveaway.

I don't see any fillings! Under mardi gras cakes, it only shows one option of "no filling".
Looking over some of the postings, I think the cream cheese sounds good!

Well, i am copying off the previous posters. I couldn't find the fillings on the site. I'd do the pecan praline. I didn't know you could specify fillings for a king cake.

Jayfr said...

Fillings aren't showing up on the site now, maybe it's too late to order with filling with the rush coming. From the list here, I'd pick the pecan one.

Qwill said...

I would love to try the strawberry filling and I miss king cake since we moved away from se Texas.

Kathy said...

I would love the pecan praline. We lived in New Orleans about twenty years ago and I don't remember so many yummy fillings available. I loved King Cakes!

Pam said...

I've never had a king cake, but they sound delicious! The Turtle Cheesecake King Cake sounds fabulous and that's the filling I'd like to try... first, because I'd like to try all of them!!

These sound so delicious. I would love to try one with Strawberry filling! Thanks!

Filling? Talk about gilding the lily! However, I think cream cheese would make a lovely addition, a nice counterpoint to the sweetness of the cinnamon and icing. Boy, doesn't that look good!
I've never had King Cake. I think this would be an excellent time to start! Thank you for an awesome giveaway.

Oooh I love King Cakes! I usually make a couple for Mardi Gras, but they're a fair amount of work. I'd like someone else to make one for me!
I'm missing something because I can't find a place on their website to pick the filling... there's only a 'no filling' button when I check out the king cakes! Which is perfectly ok - they're delicious without! But I know that cream cheese is a common filling that would be delicious.

Unfortunately I could find no filling option on your website! But after reading through the posts I find I'm torn between the sinful Turtle Cheesecake and the luscious Cream Cheese and Strawberry or Cherry filling! I've always hear about your King Cakes - but never had divine pleasure of savoring one!
